The Developmental Impact of Scholasticism Essay examples

Scholasticism, which experienced its height around 1250, was the conjunction of faith and reason directed toward understanding the contradictions in the bible and Church teachings. The goal was to strengthen the Church’s teachings by validating them against argument and critical analysis (at least more critically than previously had been allowed with the sole goal of producing results positive toward the Church.) There is an almost natural progression from this point of critical thinking within the confines of Church dogma and independent study and scrutiny turned toward the Church itself and it’s doctrines, and later to the evolution of civic administration and political leaderships ultimately giving birth to the concept of the state. The critical approach to looking at those institutions which society places authority which is validated by a core value of that society began with the Humanism movement, where theologians defended their inquiry into Church doctrine and later on with the Biblical text itself as a process that brought them closer to the truth of belief or when it comes to authority trust. I find this very similar and perhaps a precursor to our American Founding Fathers when they provided freedom of speech, and peaceful dissent against authority invested in our governmental leaders, which has based and shaped our core democratic values.
